The 11 best food halls, market halls, and food courts in Zurich (2024)

The Zeughauskeller is a central location in Zurich and is one of the largest beer halls in the city. It was built in 1487 and originally used as a weapons arsenal. Today, it still hosts military equipment, making it an important part of Zurich's culinary history.

Fantastic experience all around! The place itself has an incredible history as an old armory and it's absolutely stunning. The staff were phenomenal and accommodating. (Reservation recommended but we still got in without one thanks to the savvy host!) The most important thing was the food and beer and our group was not disappointed. We each had different meals and tried a few different beers, yes a few. Shout out to their house beer! It was all excellent. After dinner we wandered around the most charming area of shops and gorgeous river views with swans. It was picturesque. 10/10 I would go out of my way to come back here the next time we come to Zürich. Danke, Zeughauskeller!

Good old authentic Swiss food. We didn’t plan on going here until we asked a bunch of locals for an authentic restaurant. We went here, the schnitzel, cord en blue and pork shank were good. Potato salad is an amazing side that’s not on the menu. You have to make a reservation or U have no chance of getting in for dinner. The apple strudel for dessert was good.

We were walking around and stumbled on this place. The line was long so we thought I must have been good. The line moved quickly and we were Seated in just a few minutes. The food here was delicious! As a family of four we all ordered something different including an appetizer and tried all of our dishes. Everything was great! Definitely would recommend.

This place is a must-visit if you want to try out authentic traditional Swiss food in a traditional Swiss restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation in advance as this place was packed when we visited around lunch time. They have menus in multiple languages and the staff were very enthusiastic, helpful and friendly. Was brought her for lunch by my local friends and I tried the veal with Rosti (can’t exactly remember the name of the dish). The meal was served in around 10-15 minutes despite the restaurant being packed during lunch. Will definitely return!

Embrace this tourist trap. We did it twice. Come for the beer hall atmosphere, surprisingly cheerful service and passable “traditional dishes” at reasonable prices for Old Town Zürich. You can even get some veggies to balance out their schnitzels if one order mindfully. Not that we did.

Place was a good spot for excellent food, with a fascinating atmosphere as it used to be an old armory. Be mindful of it being crowded, you may have to expect a long wait especially during travel season. There was a good selection of food and all the dishes we had tasted excellent and none of us had complaints. The waitress who helped us could speak some English and was very helpful with our order, drinks and food. Definitely a good spot for tourists to eat lunch.

You must try this old restaurant. Very traditional delicious food, sausages, meat and rosti. You can find a list of different type of beer and wines. Try the dessert if you are still hungry. The service is quick and nice. Enjoy.

Great German food. The sausage and Rostov is fantastic. The veal with mushroom sauce is a must to try. Staff are patience and friendly. We definitely feel welcome and ends up having two meals in a row here ☺️☺️There will be queue but I’ll say it is worth it 😅👍🏻

Food was really good and the staff were so friendly. I loved the schnitzel and the staff had suggested I have the potato salad as a side. I thought they went perfectly. The potato salad was a little tangy, which balanced out the grease from the schnitzel. Also had a side of sauerkraut and that was a huge serving. Very good though.

It's only accessible by foot. The Swiss food was not too bad at all. It's just a bit unusually salty for Asians. Advance reservation is highly recommended for tourists. The toilet is only accessible by stairs since the place was built in over a century. Wheelchair is completely inaccessible to the toilet. Service was still great despite its crowd.

Amazing service and food! Came here due to the good reputation and reviews and was not disappointed. We had the traditional bratwurst with potato salad and the sliced beef salad, with the house beer and then raspberry meringue for desert. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional.I would note that if you are a group of 2 and wish to sit outside, you will share half the table with another couple. If your group is bigger than 2 then this wouldn’t be an issue.Other than that I couldn’t recommend this restaurant more and will definitely return when in Zurich again.

Traditional beer house experience. Perfect for introduction to the Swiss German cuisine. Recommend to come early in case you need to make the line, go with the flow and enjoy the atmosphere.

Must visit. Great restaurant with interesting history. Delicious food, great drinks, awesome service, and friendly staff. Place always packed, but it is worth the wait, which you will be seated in reasonable time. If you are a party of two, expect to share table with others, which is cool to meet other travelers. We had a great experience.

Sam — Google review

The restaurant offers traditional swiss food, in the centre of town. Fair prices, good service, and a great environment. You definitely need a reservation and be aware that you will get a time slot of 2 hours for dinner. It's still a very good recommendation for anyone, especially tourists. It has a limited offer for vegetarians.

If there is one restaurant to visit in Zurich, Zeughauskeller, is the one, imo. Established generations ago and encompasses a historic building that dates back to the 1480’s.It’s a combo of beer/dining hall that seats close to 400 and it’s always full. We went for dinner with no reservations but the wait was only 10 minutes. It has lively atmosphere with tourists, families and locals all dining.Sausages, brats and other meats primarily makeup the menu and they do it right. I had the fresh veal in mushroom sauce with a side of rosti €36 (think American hash browns) and my friend had the original veal sausage €23. Both were excellent. We added the meringue whipped dessert. Two meringue cookies, with ice cream in between and whipped cream on top €14. Also delicious.A bit pricey but you’re there for the experience, atmosphere, history as well as the very good food.Check out the videos and pics. That’s all for now!

Absolutely amazing server who was very attentive and seemed to speak every language perfectly. We choose some amazing sausages and beers and I enjoyed the onion beef soup. Very cool spot and would highly recommend.

We stood in line to enter the restaurant because the restaurant was full of people. There were two of us and we shared a table with two English friends who gave us a table for four. The waiter was very nice, kind and professional. The food we got was very tasty and good. This restaurant is very professional in serving customers. The cost of food for two people was 70 Swiss francs

It was super crowded! But thanks for the reviews on the Google map, I made a reservation at first!! So I don't need to wait😍The historical meaning and the atmosphere of this old arsenal is cool for me!The cuisines, however, weren't fit my taste. I would say just on average.

We spent two days in Zurich, and I wanted to find the place with the most authentic atmosphere and food. I suspect this beer garden gets to be the spot.We had the veal Zurich style here, and it was the most delicious one we had throughout our stay in Switzerland.Either beer on the menu you try, they are all great choices. The pork shank with the rosti was excellent as well. The bottom line, this is a must-try place with authentic dishes, beer, and a great atmosphere.

Delicious food for dinner. We ordered veal with mushrooms in delicious creamy sauce and sausages with mashed potatoes. Great atmosphere with armoury decorations and built in 1487. I would highly recommend must go for anyone visiting Zurich.

We had an absolutely perfect evening here! We did not have a booking, and it was very busy, but they seated us after a short wait (2 people). There are shared tables, so the atmosphere is vibrant and people are lovely! The food was excellent. A good range of Swiss dishes, extremely well prepared. The pork was cooked perfectly and their house dessert was extremely tasty, best meringue I've ever had!Their service is friendly and warm, yet professional. Every server was wonderful and very helpful.

Tried the 2 recommended dish with beef and beef liver (?). The sides can be chosen from potato galettes, vegetables or salad. The portion was worthy of value. You always have a limited time for one meal, but as an experience to the famous restaurant, it’s worthy to try.

Shiyu M — Google review

The place seems to be a local attraction and almost all the time has a huge line of people who want to be seated. However, the place has two entrances the main where is the line and the other one right across it. Apparently (as we didn't know which one is which), we came through the second entrance and got seated without staying in line. Take it as the life hack. The place is sort of mesume as decorated with different pieces of weaponry from medieval time to WWII as the Switzerland is famous for its craft in weapon makingThe food was good and hearty, not fancy, more like on home-cooked style, but yet very tasty.I really liked their calf liver.

Amazing food and the service was phenomenal! Luis was our server and provided great suggestions, service, and overall made our experience stand out. Additionally, the food was delicious.

Recommend to book the table in advanceYou can book online 2 days beforeIf didn't book, walk in is acceptable but wait about 30min- 1 hour depend on availability.Pork Knuckle taste is different from German. This plate does not serve with pickle. The portion is not so big, you can order 1 dish per person.

Walunpat S — Google review

This is a very busy restaurant, always with big queues. It is recommend to reserve a table. Unfortunately you do need to share a table with others. The restaurant is full of tradition and history. Our dishes were both very tasty. The service could have been better, the staff were extremely busy and unfortunately not paying a lot of attention to their clients.Recommended.

Great atmosphere with superb food. The place is cosy with great decorations and friendly staff. The menu is extensive so everyone can find what they fancy to have .The prices are decent and both dishes blew us away! 😍The portions are generous and even one dish can fully cover two people. But I highly recommend to order both sausages and the pork.Highly recommend this place. It’s a must try for everyone 👌🏼

Touristy but still good. Got seated with no issues despite not having reservations. I enjoyed my veal liver, my girlfriend liked her mac and cheese. Everything on the menu looked good, I wish I were in Zurich longer so I could’ve tried some more items.

I ate here on my birthday while visiting Zürich for work. The staff was so incredibly friendly and nice and they even sang happy birthday to me! The fish and chips and wine was yummy and just what I needed after a long day of travels. My colleague got the sausage and sauerkraut and he loved his dish too. They even provided a birthday dessert for me and sang! The coolest thing? My coworker left a box of new chocolates he’d purchase for his wife and the restaurant kept them safe for us 4 days later. The hospitalityIs on another level here! I’d definitely go back.

Ashley B — Google review

Servers are a bit gruff, but entertaining. The food is great. On the pricey side. Reservations are not required but helpful as the restaurant is always filled up.

James S — Google review

Authentic, despite being a tourist attraction and in all the tour guides, it still delivers. Very down to earth with great service and food delivered very quickly. If you want to eat authentic Zürich then try the food here (not sure it would be the best choice for vegetarians).

Richard S — Google review

Lively food hall with German and Swiss food. I loved their paprika sausage, but not their pounded veal. Came with too many French fries. Not a terrible amount of dairy free options. Probably won't go again, but I did like that sausage more than most sausages.I also loved how spicy their mustard was. Don't find that much in the US.

Very popular place, but the turn over was fast so we didn’t wait long. If you want some solid good food and don’t mind sharing a table, this is a great option. The menu is huge, took me a long time to decide. Everything was tasty and not too pricy for Zurich standard.Service was fast and nice.Water was unbelievably expensive and they do expect tips.

Sharon Z — Google review

Such a cool place for a quick lunch! Great specials and waiter was so nice. We didn't have a reservation and they accommodated us right away. Food portions are huge and definitely good traditional Swiss cuisine. The decor and atmosphere definitely bring it all together.

Sydney R — Google review

What a hot spot in the central of Zurich! Absolutely packed during dinner time. Have to share table with others as it was really busy and fully booked. However the service was quick and food was served at a fair speed of time given the full house situation. We had the pork knuckle and lamb steak. I loved how they made the sauces with the meat -savoury, flavoursome and well presented. The sides are bombs!! Both of the dishes knocked us out 😍I will definitely revisit this place next time, what a wonderful experience.

Sandara G — Google review

One of the best restaurants we tried here in Zurich, helpful waiters and really decent food. Here you’ll see people coming from everywhere in the world to have their lunch surrounded by multiple tourist attractions. Try out their pork!
