Another of his slogans was that he would rather "wear out than rust out" and he wrote sports for the Murray Green Sheet Newspapers as well as The Voice Newspaper and the Davis County Clipper for the past several years. He had many honors from his work with young people and one of his most prized ones was the St. Pius award which he was presented in 1975 at the Cathedral of the Madeline for teaching Confraternity of Christian Doctrine to junior high and high school students for ten consecutive years for his great friend Father Thomas Meersman. Ed joined the US Navy in 1945, serving actively till 1949 in the Hospital Corps. His instinctive gentleness with the sick and injured led him to serve as a Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Marine Corps in naval hospitals in San Diego, Memphis, and Yokosuka, Japan. Ed was a member of the US Navy Ready Reserve from 1949-1961, when he was honorably discharged due to a gun shot wound he received as a Salt Lake City police officer. In 1955, Ed joined the Salt Lake City Police Department, where he learned and formed lifetime habits of curiosity, humanity, and investigation.

The deepest, strongest friendships of his life began on the SLPD. When Ed was shot by a suspect in 1960, his friends worked his shifts, supported his family and kept us afloat for over a year until he could return to full-time duty in 1961. In 1967, Ed took a medical retirement and became a representative of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Utah Council 54. At the same time, he attended the University of Utah and earned his BA in Sociology. Ed also helped organize AFL -CIO police Local 470, the forerunner of the local that serves Salt Lake City police officers today.

Ed became Chief Investigator with the Salt Lake County Attorney's office in 1970, again making lifelong friends and working landmark cases. Ed believed in the law and he believed in its fair practice and application as an American right. In 1976, he flipped to the other side of the criminal justice system and became Chief Investigator for the Salt Lake Legal Defender's office. The combination of smart, young lawyers and poor (though rarely innocent) clients, and their endlessly human, heartbreaking lives and crimes made these years some of the happiest of his life. He retired in 1993.

Ed loved people and he served on many boards and belonged to many organizations, including the Internal Brotherhood of Police Officers, the International Footprinter's Association. the Salvation Army, and others. He also loved fun, and was the founding father and guiding light of the Westminster Boxing and Dancing Club, a loosely-formed group devoted to river running and other happy activities. He marched yearly in the Salt Lake St. Patrick's Day Parade, the only Utah parade in his opinion worth attending.

He never met dog he didn't like, a horse he couldn't praise, a woman he wouldn't rise to greet, or a man with an uninteresting story. He will be dearly missed by friends and family. Services will be Tues. Feb 12, p.m.. Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 N.
