  • Royals' Angel Zerpa: Secures first win

    Rotowire

Zerpa (1-0) struck out one without allowing a baserunner over two-thirds of an inning to earn the win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

Zerpa's had a strong season, but his overall numbers are skewed by a five-run meltdown versus the Rangers last Saturday. It was just the third time all year he had allowed multiple runs, and he bounced back with a sharp outing Wednesday to grab his first win. Zerpa is at a 3.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 29 innings while adding eight holds and a blown save. The southpaw saw increased high-leverage work in May, but the Royals have gone 9-14 in June, creating fewer opportunities for him to pitch in key situations. Zerpa should continue to factor in the late innings, but he's not yet a threat to James McArthur's closer job.

  • Royals' Freddy Fermin: Drives in two in Wednesday's win

    Rotowire

Fermin went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Marlins.

The Royals' offense was stuck in neutral until the eighth inning, but Fermin capped a five-run outburst with a two-run single. The 29-year-old had been on the bench the prior three games with Michael Massey serving as the DH in his return from a lower-back strain, which kept Salvador Perez behind the plate, but playing time should open up for Fermin again once Massey is ready to resume defensive duties at second base. On the season, Fermin is slashing .294/.340/.434 with four homers, 18 RBI and 21 runs in 48 contests.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Quality start in no-decision

    Rotowire

Singer came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out five.

The right-hander delivered his sixth quality start of the season on 92 pitches (63 strikes) and completed seven innings for the first time since his first outing of the year, March 31 against the Twins. Despite the impressive performance, Singer left the mound in line for his fifth loss before the Royals' offense woke up in the bottom of the eighth inning. He'll take a 3.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 85:26 K:BB through 89.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Rays.

  • Royals' CJ Alexander: Hitting bench after two straight starts

    Rotowire

Alexander is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

After being called up from Triple-A Omaha on Monday, Alexander started at third base in the first two games of the Royals' series with the Marlins, going 0-for-6 with a pair of strikeouts. He'll take a seat Wednesday while Nick Loftin occupies third base, and it's possible the two could be part of a timeshare at the hot corner until Michael Massey is cleared to play the infield again after he served as Kansas City's designated hitter in his first two games back from the injured list.

  • Royals' Kyle Isbel: Exiting lineup Wednesday

    Rotowire

Isbel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Marlins.

Isbel missed a couple contests over the weekend with a back issue, but his absence Wednesday looks to be a routine day off after he had started both of the first two games of the series. Garrett Hampson will patrol center field for the Royals.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting out Wednesday

    Rotowire

Massey is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Marlins.

Massey started the first two games of the series at designated hitter upon his activation from the 10-day injured list, but he will begin the Wednesday afternoon tilt on the bench. Vinnie Pasquantino will serve as the Royals' DH on Wednesday while Salvador Perez gets a start at first base.

  • Royals' Dairon Blanco: Notches 15th steal

    Rotowire

Blanco stole a base as a pinch runner in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Marlins.

The steal was Blanco's 15th of the year and his fourth over 11 contests in June. The outfielder remains confined to a bench role, and he's gone just 3-for-19 with one walk and six strikeouts this month. For the year, he's slashing .236/.291/.319 with one home run, four RBI and 18 runs scored over 80 plate appearances while seeing action in 46 contests.

  • Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Handed loss Tuesday

    Rotowire

Hernandez (0-1) took the loss versus the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.

Hernandez hadn't given up a run over his first 3.2 innings back in the majors since his recall June 18. That changed in the seventh inning Tuesday, as the Marlins got RBI singles from Nick Gordon and Jazz Chisholm to flip the script on the Royals. Hernandez has allowed three runs (two earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over seven innings across eight appearances this year. While initially thought to be an option for high-leverage work, Hernandez suffered a shoulder impingement in spring training and has yet to record a save or hold in the majors this year.

  • Royals' Jesus Tinoco: Signs MiLB deal with Kansas City

    Rotowire

Tinoco signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday.

Tinoco elected to become a free agent after the Rangers designated him for assignment las week. He allowed nine earned runs in 10 innings with the Rangers prior to being cast off the 40-man roster. In his new organization, Tinoco will report to Triple-A Omaha.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Nabs two bags in loss

    Rotowire

Garcia went 0-for-2 with two steals, two walks and one run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Marlins.

Garcia drew a second consecutive start at the keystone and stole two bases in the first inning after leading off with a walk. The 24-year-old has struggled mightily in June, as he entered the contest slashing .145/.211/.169 with no homers and four steals across 90 plate appearances. The Kansas City infield became more crowded with CJ Alexander debuting and Michael Massey (back) returning from the injured list Monday (though Massey will serve as DH for now), so Garcia will have to start producing at the plate and on the basepaths to maintain a starting role.

  • Royals' Seth Lugo: Fans eight in no-decision

    Rotowire

Lugo did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Miami, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

The 34-year-old right-hander was in line for his 11th win when departing this outing, only to be let down by his bullpen. With this scoreless performance, Lugo collected his third straight quality start and lowered his June ERA to 3.69 over 31.2 innings with a 29:8 K:BB. Overall, he sports a 2.29 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 95:26 K:BB across 110 innings this season. Lugo is currently slated to make one more start this month against Cleveland at home this weekend.

  • Royals' Hunter Renfroe: Lifts homer Monday

    Rotowire

Renfroe went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 4-1 win over the Marlins.

Renfroe's blast was his first in three games since he returned from a minimal stay on the injured list with a bruised toe. The outfielder has gone 8-for-25 (.320) in June, adding three homers and seven RBI across nine contests. While he's slashing just .198/.279/.373 on the year, his bat has started to come around, offering him a bit of security in a starting role in right field. Renfroe has added seven homers 27 RBI, 23 runs scored, 10 doubles and one stolen base over 197 plate appearances.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Ends slump Monday

    Rotowire

Perez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-1 win over the Marlins.

Perez had gone 0-for-14 over his previous four games, and he'd gone seven contests without an extra-base hit. Both droughts ended when the catcher went back-to-back with Vinnie Pasquantino in the fourth inning, with Perez's homer serving as the decisive run. A poor June -- 11-for-57 (.157) over 20 games -- has taken some of the shine off of what was a strong start to the year for Perez. He's now slashing .280/.352/.462 with 12 homers, 46 RBI, 29 runs scored and 15 doubles through 77 contests.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: DH only for now

    Rotowire

Massey will be available only as a designated hitter for the time being as he returns from a back injury, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Massey was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday after missing time with a low-back ligament sprain, which was the second time this season he's missed time with a back issue. While the 26-year-old is feeling good physically, he needs some time before he's ready to play second base again. The Royals shifted Maikel Garcia over to second base and started CJ Alexander at third base Monday. Nick Loftin should also see plenty of reps at second base on days Garcia plays third, a position more familiar to him.

  • Royals turn to Seth Lugo in quest for series win vs. Marlins

    Stats

  • Royals' Vinnie Pasquantino: Snaps homer drought

    Rotowire

Pasquantino went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday in a 4-1 win against the Marlins.

Pasquantino put the Royals on the board in the fourth inning with his solo blast to right field. It was the first baseman's first long ball since the first day of June, a span of 20 contests. While Pasquantino hasn't been able to hit the ball over the fence regularly this season, he does have 20 doubles (tied for 10th in the majors) and has already blown away his previous season-best mark with 47 RBI through 76 games.
