The 19 Best Games For Fans Of Medieval History

Whether it’s Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, For Honor, Crusader Kings 3, or more, fans have a lot of choices when it comes to medieval fantasy games.

With this in mind, the following is a breakdown of some new medieval games that fans of the era can look forward to jumping into soon. While some of these upcoming medieval games have release dates just around the corner, others are still in the earlier stages of development.

Updated on June 18, 2024, by Joe Grantham: 2024 has already seen the successful release of a highly anticipated medieval game, Manor Lords, which smashed records across multiple genres. Incredibly, just a week before Manor Lords arrived, fans of the Middle Ages were also treated to the announcement of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, meaning that 2024 will likely go down as one of the greatest years for medieval games. There are also plenty of other medieval or light medieval fantasy games in development that might be released in 2024 or 2025, and fans of this era should certainly keep their eyes peeled for updates.

6 Crimson Desert

A Medieval Fantasy RPG With A Huge Scope

6 New Upcoming Medieval Games (2)
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
  • Expected Release: 2025
  • Developer: Pearl Abyss

Although it won't be arriving until 2025, Crimson Desert is certainly a game to get excited about, and players will be surprised at just how ambitious the project is. Set in a medieval fantasy world that shares some characteristics with Black Desert Online, Crimson Desert is instead a single-player open-world RPG. The continent of Pywel is reportedly huge, with players being able to explore multiple different regions, each with its own stories to tell.

From the trailer alone, fans are not only able to see how beautiful the game looks but also just how many gameplay options will be available to them. In many ways, Crimson Desert looks almost like a medieval fantasy version of RDR2, with players being able to hijack wagons and tame horses. However, there are also many unique elements, such as the ability to push siege towers onto foes or take to the skies in a hot air balloon.

5 Blight: Survival

An Extraction-Lite Game Set In A Land Ravished By Plague

6 New Upcoming Medieval Games (3)
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
  • Expected Release: TBA
  • Developer: Haenir Studio

Although it doesn't currently have a release date, Blight: Survival is an upcoming medieval game to get excited about, in large part due to the incredible combat animations that were shown off in its trailer. The premise of the extraction-lite game is that players are dropped into an alternate medieval world, where a deadly plague has taken over, infecting the fallen. This Blight mutates corpses and brings them back to life, and it is the player's job to locate the source of the Blight and destroy it.

As mentioned previously, the animations are a huge standout, as there is a real weight to every movement, and actions such as tackling and grappling are both possible. The late medieval armor also looks fantastic and highly accurate, with the developers additionally confirming that it can all be customized.

4 Kinstrife

A Medieval RPG With Physics-Based Combat

6 New Upcoming Medieval Games (4)

Kinstrife is an upcoming medieval RPG that will see players travel the tumultuous lands of 13th-century Germany as a knight with their loyal retinue in tow. The open world promises to be non-linear, allowing players to visit countless historical locations where they can engage in tournaments or real battles, earning wealth and respect.

MMORPGs can be daunting for new players. Luckily, plenty of stellar options exist for those looking to break into the world of online multiplayer.

One of the major draws of Kinstrife is the physically simulated combat that the developers claim is revolutionary. Each slash and stab of the sword or any other weapon will be fully simulated, meaning it won't simply clip through oncoming weapons or shields, and instead, players must use skill to strike in strategic places.

3 Norland

A Medieval Sim That Generates Stories Of Love & Violence

  • Platform: PC
  • Expected Release: 18 July, 2024
  • Developer: Long Jaunt

Looking to rank among the best medieval simulation games is Norland, which is inspired by titles such as Crusader Kings and RimWorld. With 2D whimsical art, the game may at first appear to be on the more wholesome side, but a deeper look into it reveals that some rather dark stories will be generated. In this title, players take on the role of a noble family and manage their town and citizens, all of whom have their own needs and personalities.

Social status, wealth, happiness, and much more will affect the decisions taken by all characters, including members of the player's in-game family. Complex relationships will emerge, sometimes with tragic endings, and players will also have to put down riots or fight foreign wars. With so much chaos, gamers will have to mete out justice or sometimes preemptively trim a few branches off the family tree of a neighboring realm while truly unique stories unfold around them.

2 Kingmakers

A Medieval Battle Simulator Where Players Bring Guns To A Swordfight

6 New Upcoming Medieval Games (7)
  • Platforms: PC and eventually consoles
  • Expected Release: 2024
  • Developer: Redemption Road Games

Kingmakers is an upcoming game that asks what would happen if one person went back to the medieval period armed with the latest military technology. In this battle simulator, players can control their army of knights, archers, and men-at-arms, but most of the game appears to be spent in third-person, with players plowing down opponents with machine guns and blowing them up with grenades.
